Construction-First Day Of Filming

What we got done?
In some spare time we had and looking at storyboards we have created we knew exactly what we would like to have got done on our first day of filming. Stuart and George teamed up during this day and was researching what other props and ideas could go into the video. Whilst they was doing this, Me and Charlie decided to get a bulk of filming done the first part of the filming we got done was the intro to the song. We set up a composistion in my bedroom of me dressing in a similar style to 'Ed Sheeran' and playing the guitar,  this is key to identifying and mimicing the original artist. We got various of shots of me playing the guitar and lip syncing the song from various angles by doing this all after each other and repeating the same shots means if there are any imperfections that have happened they can be rectified. By repeating the same shot also means anything that may change in the scene surroundings or anything with my clothing or simple things including my hair style this will not show up as any major differences between shots.

Once Charlie was happy and we both agreed that the shots looked good and of quality we decided that shot zooming into me looking out of a window would look  good. Charlie set the camera and tri-pod up in my garden and continued to start zooming into me. After the first attempt of this we realised that due to the strong winds this shot wasn't looking as quality as we'd like. To overcome this Charlie held the tri-pod still and the shot exceeded expectations and came out fine.

After this we found a green with a tree in the middle, surrounded by houses we decided that we could have a low angle moving shot of me just looking depressed. This took various different shots to capture what we was looking for, due to the moving of the camera  the shot wasn't steady and didn't quite capture what we was after. We decided to then do one which focused onto my face this then worked out to look fine not only did the shot look better but it captured some key lighting which changed as the camera changed.

We then continued to go to the local park, we then had the inspiration to have a shot on the bridge. Charlie set the camera up around 100m away and started zooming in capturing not only the surroundings by of the nature itself including ducks, trees & the lake. This seemed to work okay however due to people walking by meant we had to re-shoot one part. I decided that a swing shot where when we edit make me fade away but the swing continued to move would be an excellent shot. Charlie using his media skills caught this amazing shot this also took a few shots but due to factors including the acting.

Positives
This completed the filming of Day 1 positives from the first day include getting the shots of me on the swings this came out 100times better than we expected this fits in with what we was trying to achieve. We also found that the shots from the garden to me in the window produced a very high quality shot.

Negatives
However there are some negatives we found from the first day, some of the shots including one of me walking in the park came out very grainy due to no fault of our own. Also due to the wind being fairly strong the camera was shaking so some of the shots aren't as high quality as we would have liked.

Conclusion
From summing up the positives and negatives we now have bought a more sturdier tri-pod which will keep the camera still even if this wind is strong this therefore will overcome any negatives and problems that may have happened.

Construction-Our Proposal

We have decided as a production company to represent the popular artist "Ed Sheeran " and attempt to recreate his image as one of the uk's most popular artists by producing a cover video of his hit song "The A Team". By creating a new music video, we will be able to recreate "Sheeran's" image as hip hop artists and hopefully introduce him to a whole new audience.

We are planing to work with the initial idea for the 'offical music video' of the song however had desided to re-create it on a much more personal and serious level. For example we are planning to tell the story through a relationship, and therefore be cutting back and forth from two different stories while seeing the singer's body language and faceial expressions while he is singing inbetween just to enphasis the emotional involvement he has within the story, whereas, within the orginal music video the song is being sung from an outside view, making it very unpersonial and disconnected from emotion.

The first story being the main storyline over the whole video which is see the girl the song is about and her life now, and what she has become, from all the choses she has made, however, unlike the original music video she is still making choses, and is thinking about what her life could become she continues down the path of drugs and how much worse her life could be if she doesnt change her ways and clean up. Whereas, in the original music video, it is directed to suggest that all hope of change for this poor girl is lost.

The second story would be the other side of reality, we decided to have our main character to have a number of flashbacks throughout the intire video, to show the contrast between her life now and how her life was before she turned down the wrong path. Unlike the original music video we desided to show the moment in the girls life when she made the wrong choses and what drew or pushed her to that path, we are planning to show this through the seriousness of a relationship. However also decide to create a side of the story within the girls imagination, where we see what her future could be, as well as what her life could be if nothing had gone wrong. We are yet to start filming so these ideas are not set in stone, they maybe changed depending on how well they work with the equitment we have.

Construction-permission for song use (Email)

We have decided to use the song 'Ed Sheeran - The A Team'. In order to use this song we had to contact the record lable to ask for permission to use the before mentioned song for educational purposes only. Below you can see the email in which we contructed to send to the record label, asking them if we could use the song and clearly stating that it was only for educational purposes.

We later recieved a reply from the record label giving us permission to use the song within our music video which we are creating for our A2 media coursework. They stated that it could not be used for promotional reasons or to gain any profit by using their music as our own, we could only use it for the educational purpose of our coursework and no more.

Planning-Website Research

It also has links to many different pages that contain more information about our artist, this is a common motif within every website, of this style, that are dedicated to a specific artiste of any form. these other pages are what make the website useful, attractive, and appealing to the artists fans. These kinds of pages are exactly what we will need to do, we will have to represent ed sheeran for our website and create our own photo album of the artist which can be integrated into one of our pages, not only that, but we will also include a link within the website that will connect to the actual music video we will be creating for Ed Sheerans song "the A Team". will also create a radio broadcast to promote the new re-released single. This radio broadcast will also be linked into the website. As you can see the second page on this website is "news", this is one of the most common pages within all websites, and with this we can create our own page of news that includes the most recent news on the artist and any up coming events, and how much time is left and how many tickets, along with any other aspects of that nature.

As you can see, after deciding on which artist we would like to represent (Ed Sheeran) we released we would have to create a website to promote Ed Sheeran to the public with our new recreated image in mind. A great deal of psychology went into designing this website, the way every aspect has a different patton and style. It creates a very rebellious imagery, the way the title is written in a graffiti style or how the pictures are off colour from the rest of the home page, this site is the perfect example of the kind of webpage we need to design, it is also covered in links to many different sites that contain aspects of the artist.

Planning- Album cover Research

this is the most recent album cover from the artist that we have chosen to represent (Ed Sheeran), however this album cover creates a certain image for the artist, this an image of the artist that we want to break away from and recreate. this album cover is very dull and ordinary, but creates a slight idea of rebellious behaviour, by having clashing colours and intertextual image on the front cover. However we would like to take the rebellious theme and blow it out of proportion, we would like to re-create this rebellious image by showing the true destruction and chaos of the mind of the target audience that we are trying to attract (16-21year olds)

this second album cover is much closer to the type of image we are trying to re-create, as you can see the image used it much more abstract and unrealistic version of a traditional image found on many album covers of today, as if escaping the traditions of conventional structures of album covers, the text use only emphasises this idea, a title that has no paten what so ever, as if not following any kind of rules or conventions. Im planning to create an album cover however that contains more recognisable images that are all combined together to create a chaotic image as well as the rebellious image.

Planning-online "music video" survey

I went online to www.surveymonkey.com where i made a survey for our research for our music video. It is aimed at the "teenage" demographic so that we can understand what our target audience is looking for.

I then created a link to put on facebook where our target demographic could go online and take our survey. Facebook is ideal because most the country's youth is online and it is where they can have easy access.

Sense we have already decided on the artist and song we are doing, we needed to find out whether our song would suit the audience, and not only finding out if our demographic would related to our project, but to find out what our target audience like to see. After analysing our results from the the survey it  strengthens the idea that our artist is very popular, and the genre he represents is  widely accessed by our target audience. Also we now have hard evidence, showing that using a storyline, will not only make the video have a much better feel, but will add to the audiences interest. Finally we now know what we have to include to keep the video up to date and as current as it can be.

Planning-target audience interviews

Planning-target audience interview findings

After deciding on the artist and song we are doing, we needed to find out whether our song would suit the audience not only finding out demographics related to our project but to find out what people of our target audience like to see.

We started by finding 6 people all of a similar age range which was from 16-21 then we asked simple open ended questions which will help in making decisions in what we are going to include in our music video.

The questions which were asked were:
1. What is your favourite genre of music?
2. Do you watch many music videos?
3. Do you prefer the music videos to have a story line or not following a pattern?
4. What do you like to see in music videos?
5. Who is your favourite artist or singer?

From these five questions we can understand whether our artist is up to date, if they are popular, and if the video should follow a linear path or not. These are major decisions and without the background demographic data then what we decide could put our project in jeopardy.

After interviewing the 6 candidates we were able to analyse what we found, although the interviews contained open ended questions which means they cannot be collated we can look at what we found and draw some conclusions.

Question 1: This was a very broad question as there are many genres that exist and many people could have chosen from, however the majority of interviewees suggested they like Indie Pop or R&B this is what our hypothesis hoped we'd find as it is relevant to our artist.

Question 2: All of our interviewees answered yes which means it is worth our time and effort creating a video to 'The A Team' as not only will it be relevant we know that the audience is their to watch it.

Question 3: This is one of the most vital questions as it decides our layout for the music video, 5 out of our 6 interviewees said that they prefer one which follows a path. There was many reasons why they preferred this which was, "keeping the viewers involved", "Being more interesting" and "Gives the viewers something to relate to".

Question 4: This question will help to decide what motifs to introduce within our video, the majority of the interviewees said that they like to see 'materialism' this is the use of up to date props meaning clothing and technology. This will help as we can include clothing which we know the audience will like to see and are wearing.

Question 5: This again like the genre question means the answer given can be very broad, however this worked in our favour as at least 4 out of our interviewees answered 'Ed Sheeran' which yet again helps us in recognising that he is a popular artist. The other 2 interviewees who did not answer 'Ed Sheeran' did suggest a different artist who was in the same genre, this means it gives harder evidence to suggest we have chosen the right genre to use.

Conclusion
After analysing our results it furthermore strengthens the idea that our artist is very current and popular, and the genre he represents is very much widely accessed. Also we now have hard evidence that using a story line will not only make the video have a much better feel but will make the audience be more interested. Finally we also now know what we have to include to keep the video up to date and as current as it can be.

Planning-(Demographics) access Data

After deciding on what artists music we are going to cover which is going to be 'Ed Sheeran' who is an ever growing popular UK artist who reached number one in the downloadable charts. We are going to produce a music video of his big number one hit 'The A Team', throughout this post i will explain using various types of demographics how Ed Sheeran's music is accessed via the internet sources.

Ed Sheeran is accessed globally in various different countries, the main continents that watch these music videos exist in Central America and the UK. The most active city's include Los Angeles, Chicago and Houston. In  the UK the city's include London, Manchester and Birmingham.

From various opinions we have gathered we can make the conclusion that Facebook is the most popular music sharing site used by the consumer market. This statistics contradicts our first hypothesis, we thought that due to the sheer number of visitors to Youtube every day meant that this would be popular. But according to the results published via 'Music Metric' we discovered that Youtube only had 5.5million fans, in comparison to Facebook with 600million fans.

From the data used we also discovered that Facebook is the most popular social networking site used to access music videos, this is followed by Twitter but overall Facebook is widely used.

Planning-(Demographics) Genre Data (alternative Rock)

The two most popular music genres in terms of retail sales over the past 10 years are pop and rock. According to Music & Copyright, retail sales of pop music stood at US$7.4 billion in 2009, while retail sales of rock music stood at US$6.5 billion. In terms of revenue share, pop accounted for 29.2% of global music-retail sales last year, with rock taking a 25.7% share.

The closeness of the two genres at the end of the last decade was also apparent at the beginning. In 2000, pop had a global sales share of 27.8%, with rock at 22.7%. Despite a difference in year-to-year share performance, the retail-sales decline of the two genres in the previous decade has been fairly even: For pop, retail sales decreased 27.7%, while retail sales for rock fell 22.1%. However, both genres outperformed total music-retail sales, which fell 31% in 2009, to US$25.4 billion, from US$36.9 billion in 2000

With pop and rock accounting for a combined retail-sales share of 55% in 2009, other genres have clearly underperformed when compared with the global sales decline. Music & Copyright has found that the retail value of rap/hip-hop sales dropped almost 50% between 2000 and 2009. It should be noted that the performance of particular genres of music that are more popular in some larger markets, such as the US and Japan, will also be reflected on a global level because of the high share of retail sales in those markets. However, rap/hip-hop has received criticism in recent years, particularly in the US, for its close association with violence.
Rock music is a genre of popular music that developed during and after the 1960s, particularly in the United Kingdom and the United States. It has its roots in 1940s and 1950s rock and roll, itself heavily influenced by rhythm and blues and country music. Rock music also drew strongly on a number of other genres such as blues and folk, and incorporated influences from jazz, classical and other musical sources. By the late 1960s a number of distinct rock music sub-genres had emerged, including hybrids like blues rock, folk rock, country rock, and jazz-rock fusion, many of which contributed to the development of psychedelic rock influenced by the counter-cultural psychedelic scene. New genres that emerged from this scene included progressive rock, which extended the artistic elements; glam rock, which highlighted showmanship and visual style, and the diverse and enduring major sub-genre of heavy metal, which emphasized volume, power and speed. In the second half of the 1970s. From the 1990s alternative rock began to dominate rock music and break through into the mainstream in the form of grunge, Britpop, and indie rock.
In the mid-1980s, the term "indie" began to be used to describe the music produced on post-punk labels rather than the labels themselves. The indie rock scene in the US was prefigured by the college rock that dominated college radio playlists which included key bands like R.E.M.from the US and The Smiths from the UK. These bands rejected the dominant synthpop of the early 1980s and helped inspire guitar-based jangle pop

In the 2000s, the changing music industry, the decline in record sales, the growth of new digital technology and increased use of the internet as a tool for music promotion, allowed a new wave of indie rock bands to achieve mainstream success. This new commercial breakthrough and the widespread use of the term indie to other forms of popular culture, led a number of commentators to suggest that indie rock has ceased to be a meaningful term.

Planning-(Demographics) Artist Data (Ed Sheeran)

Sheeran was born in Halifax, West Yorkshire to Irish and English parents, before moving to Framlingham, Suffolk. He learned guitar at a very young age, and began writing songs during his time at Thomas Mills High School in Framlingham.Sheeran began recording in 2005, which led to the release of his first EP, The Orange Room EP. Sheeran also released 2 albums, a self-titled one in 2006 and Want Some? in 2007. He moved to London in 2008 to play gigs, starting off in very small venues, playing every day, to as little as five people. In 2008, he auditioned for the ITV series Britannia High.

In 2009, Sheeran played 312 gigs. He said that he read an interview with James Morrison that said that Morrison had done 200 gigs in a year, and Sheeran wanted to beat him on this number. Also in 2009, he released another EP, You Need Me, just before going on tour with Just Jack. In February 2010 Sheeran posted a video through SB.TV, which led to mainstream rapper Example asking Sheeran to tour with him. Also in February 2010 he released his critically acclaimed Loose Change EP, which featured his later debut single "The A Team".

On 26 April, Sheeran appeared on the TV music show Later... with Jools Holland – where he performed the song "The A Team". Six weeks later "The A Team" was released as a digital download in the United Kingdom. The release served as the lead single from Sheeran's debut studio album, entitled + – which was released through Atlantic Records on 12 September 2011. "The A Team" entered the UK chart at number 3, selling over 58,000 copies in the first week. It was congratulated on being the highest-selling and highest-charting debut single of 2011.

"You Need Me, I Don't Need You", or "You Need Me", It was released as the second single from his first studio album, and was released on 26 August 2011 in the United Kingdom. The track "You Need Me" was originally released on the You Need Me extended play in 2009. The new version of "You Need Me, I Don't Need You" was re-recorded with a heavier beat, and peaked at number 4 on the UK Singles Chart.

During his headline set in the BBC Introducing tent at the Glastonbury Festival 2011 he revealed that "You Need Me, I Don't Need You" would be his second single. The single was premiered on BBC Radio 1 as Zane Lowe's 'Hottest Record In The World' on 6 July 2011.

Ed Sheeran's popularity has sky rocketed in the last year and was, at one point, the most downloaded artist in the UK with his popular single 'the A Team'. Ed Sheeran's popularity only seems to be growing as this relatively new artist has all ready got a massive amount of loyal fans. According to a recent survey, it turns out that a large percentage of Sheeran's fans first heard or first obtained his music on eigher facebook or some other social network.

Planning-Analysis of "Modestep - Sunlight" music video

Throughout music videos various different motifs can be seen these include 'Love, Violence, Racism, Poverty, Sexuality, Materialism, Politics & Humor. Each music video uses at least one of these or a variety throughout.

Analysis of the music video
I have chosen the following video 'Modestep - Sunlight', below i will present screenshots of sections of the film these will be examples of these common motifs.
Screenshot 1 shows an elderly gentlemen stealing alcohol from an off license, this is controversial as young people normally commit these types of crime. It is also controversial as this man is old enough to buy alcohol legally where as teenagers are not old enough to buy it legally.

Screen shot 2 shows the elderly actors riding BMX’s along a sea front. This is seen as controversial as adults of this age don’t normally ride bikes in general, let alone BMX’s which are popular amongst the youth of today. This fits into the 'Humor' motif as the viewer would find this funny.

Screenshot 3 shows an elderly man with a 'beer cap' this is also seen as humorous as this is something a teenager or a younger person would be doing. This is seen as controversial as elderly people don’t wear beer caps, and are normally associated with flat caps.

This image of the elderly man smoking a 'joint' which contains cannabis is extremely controversial as the generation of today are slated throughout the press and media for taking drugs. Therefore this is controversial as elderly people look down on the youth of today where as this image shows they are the same and committing the same crimes. The picture on the right shows the gentleman sniffing cocaine of the women’s back, this is controversial as he is taking drugs but also because has doing drugs off a strippers back.

This screen shot shows the friends surrounding a table drinking out of tea cups, this is a normal image which springs to mind when thinking of elderly peoples actions. However instead of drinking tea or coffee they are drinking 'Jagermister', this is controversial as this isn’t an everyday image you see.

This image shows a table being turned over by the elderly friends, this can be seen as violence which leads onto why this is controversial. This is seen to be controversial as the older generation are very laid back and placid, this image goes against the norms and shows them being the opposite.

This screenshot shows the elderly actor relaxing whilst a young women in just her underwear, seductively posing. This can be seen as the motif sexuality, this is very controversial as older people tend not to be seen with younger women in this context.

Fragmentation of the body

Fragmentation is showing close ups of one body part during a clip, this is then used to emphasis what is going on. This draws your attention to this one thing and makes you concentrate on this.
Below shows an example of this, it shows the man using drug paraphernalia, but by just focusing on his hands draws the viewers attention to what is going on.

Break from the music video narrative

A break from the video narrative is a part of the music video that takes a different path to what has been going on. Throughout this music video it shows elderly people doing controversial things. But throughout different parts of the video it shows the actual artists singing and making the actual song. This therefore is what is meant by a break from the narrative.

Planning-Aspects of music videos

The main Aim of any music producer creating a music video is maintain the viewers attention, they manage this in many ways, for example a hooking narrative, fragmentation of the body, violence, or a recognisable environment that everyone relate with excitement, such as parties or night clubs. Most music videos are 3-5 minutes long, any longer and they are usually compressed. However there are many exceptions to this, especially from the 70's and 80's such as Michael Jackson- "Thriller" which was 13 minutes long. Music videos are kept short for a number of reasons firstly to have the lowest possible prise, as longer videos can be extremely expensive. Secondly because the average person has such a short attention span that they are made shorter with quicker transitions between actions within the video to avoid tune outs, the same method used when making creating television advertisements or series. To gain maximum profit it is beneficial for producers to play as many videos in a short amount of time therefore this is achieved by being shorter. They have become this way as producers are aware that we are passive viewers and are able to do many other things at home, such as doing homework, while watching T.V. As music videos have become this way there are many things missing as there is no time to develop characters we instead get stereotypes so we can quickly understand the person. There fore characters and plot are weak to accommodate the song, not the other way around. Music videos attempt to rather than tell a story, convey an overall message.
