Planning-Aspects of music videos

The main Aim of any music producer creating a music video is maintain the viewers attention, they manage this in many ways, for example a hooking narrative, fragmentation of the body, violence, or a recognisable environment that everyone relate with excitement, such as parties or night clubs. Most music videos are 3-5 minutes long, any longer and they are usually compressed. However there are many exceptions to this, especially from the 70's and 80's such as Michael Jackson- "Thriller" which was 13 minutes long. Music videos are kept short for a number of reasons firstly to have the lowest possible prise, as longer videos can be extremely expensive. Secondly because the average person has such a short attention span that they are made shorter with quicker transitions between actions within the video to avoid tune outs, the same method used when making creating television advertisements or series. To gain maximum profit it is beneficial for producers to play as many videos in a short amount of time therefore this is achieved by being shorter. They have become this way as producers are aware that we are passive viewers and are able to do many other things at home, such as doing homework, while watching T.V. As music videos have become this way there are many things missing as there is no time to develop characters we instead get stereotypes so we can quickly understand the person. There fore characters and plot are weak to accommodate the song, not the other way around. Music videos attempt to rather than tell a story, convey an overall message.
